My Performance for Voice 2 Act

Acting classes are fun! I recently joined the Voice 2 Act weekend classes in Johannesburg, where I have been learning a ton about my own acting range and how to expand it. It's a great opportunity to meet actors from different backgrounds and experiences, who all strive towards one goal - to create the best scene possible. 

 We usually will work on a scene for a month, including character studies, rehearsals and exploring different ways of delivering the lines. Then the best segment of our scene is shot on camera so we can watch ourselves perform.... *gulp*!

 The first scene I worked on is called "Privacy". It opens on a tabloid journalist who is viciously confronted by a well known actor, regarding a nasty rumour that the actor denies fully. The journalist doesn't back down, and the result is quite an engaging conflict. In this short clip of the scene, I play the journalist:

I look forward to the next scenes, which I hope will allow me to explore different types of characters and stretch those acting muscles.

John Chilembwe Play: A Polished Performance

History is not everyone’s favourite subject, and certainly has been given a reputation through years of international media as being boring - a long droning list of dates and facts. If the reality truly reflects this, perhaps an alternative teaching method would be to turn history lessons into theatre performances. That is exactly what YDC Theatre did when they brought to life the story of Malawian historical figure John Chilembwe, in a play titled  Operation Mandala: 1915 . The play is written and directed by Fumbani Innot Phiri Jr ( Chimmy the Chambo Has 3 Wishes, YDC Theatre's Macbeth ), whose invisible touch is responsible for the cohesive strength of the production.  The first impression when watching the play is observing the level of teamwork and synchronicity amongst the cast. I hate it when young people die. I hate it so much. It's like the feeling of your chest getting winded without warning. Having held your breath for some physical feat you are sure is going to pay off incredibly, only to falter without seeing it happen. Potential that is simply... lost. No real understanding why, no one to answer for the unfulfilled promise of a life which once was, and without warning, no longer is. That is bad enough.
