The writers are ready! If you're in Blantyre, Malawi this Friday, check out the January 2018 Storytelling Session. We've got a wide variety of genres, drama, fairytales, superheroes, science fiction, and fantasy. 

Malawians are writing, and they want to read their stories to you. See you at 6pm this Friday...

Some call them writers... we call them heroes
(and princes, queens, assassins, ninjas etc)

My Book Review of Zoo City by Lauren Beukes

When I first fell in love with urban fantasy stories, I began longing for books which had great fantastical elements but were  based   closer   to home , rather than in the typical American or British backdrop. I found a lot of African fiction, but rarely found anything targeted at young adults. There were either folk stories for very young readers, or depressing case study type stories, often strictly set in rural Africa and seemed to simply check all the NGO interest  boxes   – poverty, AIDS, and tragedy. While these stories were often well written and important in highlighting the issues, they were far too monotonous for me when it came to mood and pacing. They became clichés of the "hut and dust" Africa, leaving the cities that I've lived in largely invisible in the narratives... or else the urban locations featured as a strange contrast for the village based main characters. John Chilembwe Play: A Polished Performance

History is not everyone’s favourite subject, and certainly has been given a reputation through years of international media as being boring - a long droning list of dates and facts. If the reality truly reflects this, perhaps an alternative teaching method would be to turn history lessons into theatre performances. That is exactly what YDC Theatre did when they brought to life the story of Malawian historical figure John Chilembwe, in a play titled  Operation Mandala: 1915 . The play is written and directed by Fumbani Innot Phiri Jr ( Chimmy the Chambo Has 3 Wishes, YDC Theatre's Macbeth ), whose invisible touch is responsible for the cohesive strength of the production.  The first impression when watching the play is observing the level of teamwork and synchronicity amongst the cast.
